From Career to Maternity, my Pregnancy Journey

Having been career focused in my early twenties and thirties I had thought that I would go back to work when my maternity leave was up. When my son was six months old, I was already dreading going back to work. I'd become a master of changing bags, diapers, etc. and had a fixed routine with my son. Childcare arrangements were fiendishly expensive and arranging my work hours and commute around pick up and drop off times was going to be a logistical challenge. Nothing could have prepared me for the bond I felt with my child and the thought of leaving him a commute away worried me terribly. As it happens the choice was made for me as my employer made me redundant whilst I was on maternity leave. The money from my redundancy and support from my husband has enabled me to spend more precious time with my son. It is time that I feel is a gift, as I know when he starts school he won’t need me during the day in the same way. I never thought that I would be taking time out to be a full time mother. If you have the option of taking some time out of your career it is very rewarding. Yes you do sometimes feel a bit of envy for the career Mums, but you have to remember that you are doing something equally worthwhile and important.
