Claiming Costs of an Accident

Many people think that compensation claims are just getting an amount of money to compensate you for your injury. Many people do not realise that it also includes costs as well.
There is the possibility that your injury could cause you a lot of costs. You might have to pay for travel hospital appoints or clinics and things like that. You may have to either pay for medication or prescriptions, which can be very expensive. You may need to buy things to help you with mobility or other items to help you manage your illness. If you are seriously injured you may even need to pay someone to look after your house or children or even yourself. There is also the possibility that you might have private medical treatment. This is likely to only be paid if there was no NHS equivalent available or if it was a significant factor in your recovery.
Loss of income is also a big possible cost. If you are working, then you could be entitled to sick pay. This might be at full salary for a long time. However, this is unusual. Some people are self employed or on contracts and may not be able to claim sick pay. Others might only get statutory sick pay or a lower level to their normal salary. This can cause big financial problems, especially if you are the main breadwinner in the family.
The specific costs that you can claim, will be explained by your solicitor. They will be able to let you know whether they are likely to be seen as acceptable by the judge. You will have to produce some sort of proof in the way of receipts, medical records or appointment times and things like that so that they can show the judge evidence of them.
